The History of Shirecliffe Cottage

Shirecliffe Cottage has been in our family for over 40 years. It is one of the original coastguard cottages and is less than a minute's walk to the beach.

Shirecliffe Cottage, located at Anderby Creek in Lincolnshire, has a unique history tied to its origins and its association with Miss Phoebe Jukes, a notable figure in its story.

Early History

Shirecliffe Cottage was originally part of the "Coast Guard Cottages," specifically known as No. 1 Coastguard Cottage. These cottages were likely built to house coastguards in the area, reflecting the coastal community's connection to maritime safety and life along the Lincolnshire coastline.

Renaming and Miss Phoebe Jukes

The cottage gained its current name after Miss Phoebe Jukes (1885-1966) acquired it. Miss Jukes had been a prominent businesswoman in Sheffield during the 1920s, where she operated the "Shirecliffe Hotel" in Pitsmoor. After moving to Anderby Creek, she renamed the property "Shirecliffe Cottage" in keeping with her connection to the hotel.

Ambitious Plans

In 1932, Miss Jukes sought permission to build a large hotel on her land at Anderby Creek. This proposal demonstrated her entrepreneurial spirit and vision for developing the area. However, the hotel was never built, and instead, she turned her focus to a more modest but significant venture.

The Palm Court Café

In 1938, Miss Jukes opened the "Palm Court Café" on her property. The café became a local feature, serving the small community and visitors to the coastal area. Unfortunately, after changes in management and the devastating floods of 1953, the café ceased operations permanently. The land was eventually cleared to make way for an extension of the car park.

Later Years and Legacy

Miss Jukes passed away in Sheffield in 1966. Despite spending her final years in Sheffield, her recorded address remained "Shirecliffe Cottage," Anderby Creek, signifying the importance of this coastal home in her life. The cottage retains historical significance as part of the coastal heritage of Anderby Creek and as a reminder of Miss Jukes's entrepreneurial contributions to the area.
